Pre-Diabetes
In the United States over 20 million people between the ages of 40 to 74 are believed to have the condition that has been labeled “pre-diabetes.”
Pre-diabetes is a condition of elevated blood glucose, where the glucose levels are not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. Some long-term damage to the body, especially to the heart and circulatory system, may already be taking place in people with pre-diabetes, according to recent research.
Pre-diabetes and Insulin Resistance are similar in that blood sugar has become uncontrolled, causing the pancreas to struggle to maintain insulin production at the correct level. Insulin Resistance can lead to pre-diabetes, which in turn may lead to full-blown diabetes. However, a person may be Insulin Resistant for several decades before they develop pre-diabetes. During this time, their own insulin is failing to allow glucose into the cells.
There are two different tests used to diagnose pre-diabetes: the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and the fasting plasma glucose test (FPG). They both measure blood glucose levels to determine whether you have a normal metabolism, or whether you have pre-diabetes or diabetes. Gaining excessive weight is itself an sign that you may have Insulin Resistance or pre-diabetes.
Weight Loss and Pre-Diabetes
People with pre-diabetes are at risk of developing type II diabetes. The good news is that they can usually prevent this happening by changing what they eat and how much they exercise. It is even possible in many cases to return blood glucose levels to the normal range. Researchers have tested a number of medications for pre-diabetes. Meanwhile, there is no doubt from the scientific studies that healthy eating and moderate exercise, along with the right combination of nutritional supplementation, offer a safe and effective solution to the problem.
But what kind of exercise is best for you? What foods should you eat? And which nutritional supplements really make a difference?
